A short domestic flight from Taipei up to Matsu, where we were close, almost too close, to the country on the other end. Nevertheless, it was a getaway trip I have long awaited.
Matsu is made up of several small islands, linked together by the blue ocean. Blue was a prominent colour there. The scenes coloured by teal and turquoise water, with patches of navy blue swifts across where the pure white clouds smears the true blue sky above it. Soft winds breezes pass the skin lightly and immerses into the green land of grass. I really liked Matsu.
The roads weren't crowded with business, but neither was it void with emptiness. It's still, yet not stiff. We toured the city mostly by walking from one sight to another, that way, we enjoyed the view every single chance we had. The glazing sunlight never missed a day either. The herd of deers resting beneath the trees provided us perfect cooling shades when we fed them leaves and the brightly painted temples guided our way to a full circle round the city. We sat in cafes to fully absorb all the beauty in this city that once fought for Taiwan, yet is so near China.
I remember the complexity of emotions the citizens in Matsu seems to all feel together. What does one feel when they are apart of a country that fought against where their ancestors came from, and one can not retrieve backwards? So close to China that it is visible with the eyes, and so far from Taiwan I needed an flight. But I love Matsu, it's like I was away, but still home.
