A short 4 days holiday vacation to Hong Kong. This time it is just my mother and I. A girl's trip. We decided to visit some classic Hong Kong tourist areas for the tomb stone festival that somehow turned into a Michelin Food Journey.
Since Hong Kong is also known for their amazing dim sum, buns and many other dishes, we went to many restaurants that made it to the Michelin stars and recommended list. It's safe to say that we definitely ate too much. The famous saying "Early birds catch the worms" can be used to define our trip, we got up at 8 every morning and arrived at most the restaurants earlier than regular crowds, we were never in line for more than 10 minutes. My absolute favourites were the egg tarts from 泰昌餅家, the freshly baked crusts were so crisp but dense with a bit of salt; the soft but crisp white radish cake from 翡翠拉麵小籠包; the simple 炸兩腸粉 from 一點心 that consisted of the thin and smooth 粉粿 contrasting with the crispy 油條, stole my heart. I might even suggest they were the best of those dishes I've ever eaten in my life yet.
A short funny story, my mother and I bought over 15 moon cakes from 4 different stores since they were all fresh out of the oven when we visited, and we ate all of them ourselves. Indulging, but sickening after the trip. We ate so much that we feel entitled to be able to comment on all moon cakes, their different textures, ingredients and crusts. It was really fun.
The streets of Hong Kong are very unique. Unlike China, Singapore or Taiwan, the older alleys gives me a nostalgia of the late 19th century of China. Bright colours of red, yellow and orange are often seen with a thin layer of grey ash, creating a somewhat unique coherence of the city. I especially loved the traditional houses, they are all so magnificent, I felt small and alienated looking at them from the ground. They all seem to tower over me. Shopping malls, however, really made Hong Kong the city it is known today, full of high class brands like Givenchy, Alexander Wang, Hermes amongst many more.
This was a really relaxing and a short holiday I needed. The food, streets and the view of the ocean and the city were all very new to me. The hour tour on the tram in Hong Kong island allowed me to practice my photography which I am quite proud of some photos from this trip!
