In a metropolis, one is seen by everyone and no one at the same time. Everyone carries their own stories busying themselves from one place to another, merely a small, insignificant individual in an enormous city. It is a place where there are stories in each corner we turn, each shop we enter, and each person we pass by.
The theme behind my exhibition is “Living in a Metropolis”. The word “metropolis” refers to a grand, bustling city like New York City, London or Shanghai. Everyone is there for a purpose. People have a goal that they strive to achieve and it feels like everyone walks and talks with a sense of assertion and determination. The overwhelmingness of a metropolis creates a complex and changing relationship I have living in one. From the moment I enter a city, fascinated by all things; to moments of astonishment; to the times that I lost myself in the crowd, to resolving and finding my place in the chaos; to arriving at peace with who I am. It is a journey of finding oneself through living in a metropolis.
This comparative study analyses the connections between artist Francis Bacon’s Study of a Head (1952), Self-Portrait (1987), and contemporary artist Jenny Savile’s Shadow Head (2007–2013). Created in different periods, these portrait paintings all convey the beautiful nature of human emotions. This study aims to examine the similarity and differences in the colour, composition, and the cultural significance of the pieces. It will be supported by my portrait painting, Self-doubt (2019).
